Ratings & Awards
TeliaSonera has performed very well in international sustainability ratings. The ratings focus on different CSR areas and use several indicators, but what is common for most of the rating indexes is that the companies to be rated should have three areas clearly stated: policies, practices and documented results.
In general, Scandinavian countries have not had CSR policies. However, they have created good practices and achieved good results in many CSR related areas. This type of approach has stemmed from the advanced social security systems in those countries, which are based on legislation. The companies have not seen any reason to write their own CSR statements because most of the things typically covered by such documents are already stipulated by law.
Today, the situation has changed and companies have defined their own CSR policies and codes of conduct. This shows that companies are truly committed to developing CSR and realize that there is a lot more to gain by acting on a voluntary basis than just by complying with legislation, however advanced. This open commitment to CSR can also be seen in the rating results.
The former companies of TeliaSonera (Telia and Sonera) were, for instance, e.g. a part of Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes for many years. Today as a new company, TeliaSonera has already been included in many indexes and ethical funds and classified best by its commitment to carbon dioxide issues. In 2006 TeliaSonera was selected into the prestious Dow Jones Sustainability Index.
